Block 8, Disco Sue
This decade went dancing
by with "Stayin' Alive"!
Mood rings, Star Wars figures, Rubik’s cube, smiley face stickers and pet rocks all captured the imagination of Americans during this decade. The wildest fad surely was streaking nude through public places!
The movie, Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta fueled the “disco fever” already sweeping the music and dance club scenes. As the soundtrack played one Bee Gees hit after another (including “Stayin’ Alive”), moviegoers watched white-suited Tony Manero (John Travolta) strut his stuff amidst flashing lights. In the first half of 1978, the movie’s disco songs saturated the singles charts up to four at a time and marked the rise and then fall of the 1970’s disco culture.
