Sunbonnet Sue Pattern:
Block 5, Rosie the Riveter
Sue was a vital part
of America's
wartime was girlpower!
When World War II started in 1941, the country did its best for the boys fighting overseas. Women turned in their silk stockings to make powder bags for naval guns. They saved bacon grease, empty toothpaste tubes and worn tires and turned them in to be used for gas masks and ammunition.
In the five months after Pearl Harbor, 750,000 women volunteered for duty at armament plants. These "Rosie the Riveters" eventually helped speed up wartime production by building cargo ships in 17 days and bomber airplanes in 13,000 hours. On V-J DAy, August 14, 1945, the war with Japan came to an end.
Take a journey through the Century with Sunbonnet Sue.
